Having only a cup of early a.m. coffee, I could no more ignore my growling, empty stomach at noontime today. Therefore, I was eager to relish my butter-coated, syrup-soaked, fresh-off-the-pan blueberry pancake.
With the distinct pancake aroma permeating throughout my cozy, snug kitchen, I took the time to sit properly at my square kitchenette table and pretended that I was inside a Pancake House ready to enjoy my order.
I squeezed an ample amount of syrup on my steaming-hot pancake and with the fork, I methodically sliced a morsel.
As my taste buds perked up to taste the first bite, I sensed something totally different.
Surely, there was the burst of the sweet and slightly acidic blueberries; the sweet, creamy and honey-hinted Mrs. Butterworth’s corn syrup; and the lightness and fluffiness of the Krusteaz pancake mix. But there was something else.
As I made light smacking sounds, I began to taste something typically Oriental. That being a hint of oyster sauce and fish sauce!
It then dawned on me that the non-stick pan that I used to cook my pancake was the same one I utilized to reheat leftover fried rice for dinner last night.
Since the light on my stove was off, the pan looked clean when I picked it up, sitting idly on a nearby unlit burner. Therefore, I used it not knowing that I had not washed it completely of last night’s supper. Per Calphalon’s Cleaning and Care instructions, I left it untouched to cool off completely. Washing it while hot would void the Calphalon warranty. But off to bed I went, forgetting to wash the then cool pan.
After a brief scientific analysis, I did not abruptly stop to discard the pancake, but instead proceeded to continue savoring my now orientally-flavored blueberry pancake.
“Mmm…such a good thing!” I muttered.
With a Eureka-smile on my face, I mused that I accidentaly found a new way of adding an interesting Oriental twist to a blueberry pancake.
Now, if only my taste buds were keen enough to also detect all the other fried rice ingredients: garlic, onion, egg, raisins, leftover broiled salmon, asparagus, broccoli, sweet peas, corn, pepper, and, of course, the rice. But that would just be overreaching, wouldn’t it?
